Core Purpose of the Role: The Site Head – API Manufacturing is responsible for end-to-end leadership of a CDMO API manufacturing site, ensuring safe, compliant, cost-effective, and customer-centric operations. The role drives operational excellence, regulatory compliance, capacity utilization, profitability, and strong customer confidence while building a high-performance leadership team

 

Role Accountabilities:

 

1. Overall Site Leadership

  • Provide full P&L ownership for the API manufacturing site.
  • Lead cross-functional teams including Manufacturing, Quality (QA/QC), EHS, Engineering, SCM, MSAT, and Site Services.
  • Build a strong safety, quality, and performance-driven culture.
  • Act as the primary site representative to customers, regulators, and corporate leadership

2. Manufacturing & Operations Excellence

  • Ensure consistent achievement of production targets across clinical, pilot, and commercial API campaigns.
  • Drive capacity utilization, throughput improvement, and cycle-time reduction.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, Six Sigma, OPEX, TPM).
  • Ensure robust planning, scheduling, and campaign management aligned with customer commitments.

3. Quality & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure 100% compliance with global regulatory requirements (USFDA, EMA, PMDA, CDSCO, WHO, etc.).
  • Own inspection readiness and successful outcomes for regulatory and customer audits.
  • Drive strong data integrity, GMP discipline, deviation management, and CAPA effectiveness.
  • Partner with Quality leadership to embed a "Right First Time" culture.

4. EHS & Sustainability

  • Own site-level EHS performance with zero tolerance for safety incidents.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and sustainability goals.
  • Drive process safety, hazard analysis, waste minimization, and energy efficiency programs.

5. Customer Centricity & CDMO Delivery

  • Serve as an executive sponsor for key CDMO customers.
  • Ensure on-time, in-full (OTIF) delivery and high customer satisfaction.
  • Support customer audits, technical discussions, and issue resolution.
  • Collaborate with Business Development and Program Management for seamless project execution.

6. Financial & Cost Management

  • Drive cost competitiveness through yield improvement, RM optimization, and fixed-cost absorption.
  • Manage site budgets, capex planning, and cost control.
  • Improve EBITDA and PAT through productivity and portfolio mix optimization.

7. Technology Transfer & Scale-up

  • Oversee successful tech transfer from R&D to pilot and commercial manufacturing.
  • Ensure robust scale-up, process validation, and lifecycle management.
  • Partner with MSAT/R&D for process robustness and manufacturability.

8. Talent & Leadership Development

  • Build and mentor a strong site leadership team.
  • Drive succession planning and leadership development.
  • Foster collaboration, accountability, and high employee engagement.

Accountabilities as a Syngene Leader (only for Leadership Hires)

Play an active leadership role in monitoring and verifying safety performance through Gemba walks and other safety-led activities.

Qualifications & Experience

 

  • PhD / M.Tech / M.Sc. / B.Tech in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related discipline.
  • 18–25+ years of experience in API manufacturing, with significant exposure to CDMO/CMO environments.
  • Prior experience as Site Head / Plant Head / Manufacturing Head preferred.
  • Strong exposure to global regulatory inspections.
