Designation: Senior Scientist / Senior Research Investigator
Department: Translational Medicine – Translational Development (Informatics)
Location: Bangalore, India
Job Purpose
We are seeking a motivated, innovative PhD-level (or equivalent) Senior Scientist to join our Translational Medicine team at the Bristol Myers Squibb Biocon Research Center at Biocon Park, Bangalore. This pivotal role integrates advanced bioinformatics and computational biology with inputs from laboratory-based translational research to drive insights across multiple therapeutic areas including oncology, immunology, hematology and neuroscience. The successful candidate will coordinate cross-functional teams across scientific programmes or clinical datasets and apply multi-omics and AI/ML methodologies to accelerate the development of new therapies and inform strategic clinical decisions.
Key Responsibilities
•Design, execute, and oversee bioinformatics strategies for preclinical and clinical translational studies in oncology, immunology, hematology, neuroscience and related disease domains.
•Integrate and analyze high-dimensional multi-omics datasets (WES/WGS, bulk and single-cell RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, flow cytometry) to discover biomarkers, understand disease mechanisms, and support patient selection and drug development strategies.
•Develop and implement machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches for predictive modelling, feature selection, and data integration across modalities.
•Collaborate with biomarker scientists, clinical teams, and research centers to shape development strategies, clinical trial hypotheses, and target prioritization based on patient-level and real-world datasets.
•Establish and communicate best practices for NGS QC workflows; ensure reproducibility and scalability of analytical pipelines using tools such as samtools, picard, and R/Bioconductor.
•Support experimental design and data generation to advance translational strategies, including mechanism-of-action studies, combination rationale, resistance mechanisms, and differentiation from standard of care.
•Contribute to preclinical collaborations, reporting findings in written study reports and presentations for internal stakeholders, regulatory submissions, and external scientific audiences.
•Forecast and troubleshoot technical or experimental challenges, devising strategic solutions to ensure the success of current and future projects.
•Maintain a strong publication record and proactively apply insights from published literature to solve scientific problems and interpret complex study data.
Educational & Experience Requirements
•Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genetics, Engineering, with exposure to Cancer Biology, Immunology, or a related field; M.Sc./M. Tech./M. Engg. candidates with 3+ years’ relevant experience may be considered.
•Minimally 2+ years’ relevant postdoctoral or industry experience in informatics, ideally within oncology, immunology, hematology and/or neuroscience drug development is required for senior positions.
Technical & Professional Skills
•Extensive hands-on experience with RNASeq, DNASeq workflows, and common NGS tools (samtools, picard, etc.).
•Demonstrated expertise in high-throughput molecular data analysis, single-cell technologies, proteomics, and flow cytometry.
•Advanced programming skills in R and/or Python (or ability to verify code from agentic tools), including proficiency with ggplot2 and other graphing solutions; experience with Linux-based HPC environments, AWS cloud computing, and reproducible research practices.
•Strong background in machine learning and artificial intelligence, especially for -omics data integration, predictive modelling, and deep learning applications.
•Solid foundation in statistics, experimental design, and data interpretation.
•Laboratory proficiency/core awareness: cell culture, primary cell isolation, cell transfection, gene expression or mutation analysis (RNA or DNA sequencing), epigenomic assays (ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq), protein assays/immunoassays, and cell phenotyping.
•Excellent communication, managerial, and relationship-building skills; ability to interact effectively across functional, organizational, and geographic boundaries.
•Strong problem-solving ability, scientific rigor, creativity, and a track record of successful collaboration and independent leadership in a fast-paced environment.
Behavioural Skills
•Strong commitment, enthusiasm, and motivation towards work.
•Excellent speaking, listening, and writing skills; attention to detail; proactive and self-driven.
