Core Purpose of the Role:

 The candidate is expected to lead a small team of highly experienced synthetic chemists to provide solutions to challenging synthetic chemistry problems across discovery chemistry in a matrix environment. The incumbent will also be responsible to ideate, strategize and drive innovative synthetic chemistry methodology and platforms fostering an environment of creativity and scientific excellence. Discovery Chemistry SWAT team acts as a high-impact, problem-solving unit that can swiftly address complex scientific challenges, accelerate timelines, and enhance the likelihood of success for difficult chemistry projects.

 

Travel required: 50% travel to Bangalore or Hyderabad depending on the base location.

 

    Role Accountabilities:

 

  • Syngene is seeking a highly talented individual with strong leadership skills and experience in synthetic chemistry. He/She will lead a specialized team of experienced synthetic chemists based in Bangalore and Hyderabad in a matrixed discovery chemistry environment, focusing on solving complex synthetic chemistry challenges and driving high-impact project success. As a leader, the candidate will oversee a skilled group, fostering a culture of performance, mentorship, and scientific rigor.
  • Key responsibilities include developing innovative methodologies to address synthetic challenges and establishing a collaborative environment that encourages creativity and scientific excellence. The role is integral to the Discovery Chemistry SWAT team, a high-impact, problem-solving unit designed to provide swift, effective responses to complex scientific obstacles. Through strategic cross-functional collaboration, the candidate will bridge synthetic chemistry insights with broader discovery goals, accelerating timelines and enhancing project success.
  • Innovative thinking and the ability to adapt strategies to evolving needs will be essential, making this role ideal for a candidate skilled in strategic leadership, synthetic chemistry, and cross-functional engagement.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

 

  • Problem-solving expertise: Provide scientific oversight to strategic collaborations. Rapid response: Lead and drive chemistry trouble shooting team for rapid solutions to difficult chemistry. Provide scientific insight to team working on safety guidelines.

 

  • Innovation and advanced techniques: Bring cutting-edge methodologies, novel synthetic approaches, or alternative strategies that may not have been considered by the project team, including catalysis. Lead efforts towards developing a chemistry tool kit for standard synthetic chemistry transformations. Drive knowledge sharing initiatives

 

  • Internal and external collaboration: Identify educational institutes and labs working on novel chemistry to partner with. Organize/participate in chemistry conferences within India/outside India to build network. Drive higher education program within Discovery Chemistry. Identify training needs and courses for chemistry supporting science certification program within discovery chemistry. Organize seminars (internal and external speakers). Drive academic internship projects.

 

  • Skill development: Train/recruit niche subject matter experts (SME) within Discovery chemistry. Create a platform that continuously enhances the skills of scientists, ensuring their knowledge stays current and relevant over time.

Play an active leadership role in monitoring and verifying safety performance through Gemba walks and other safety-led activities.

Key Qualifications:

 

  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry with over 15 years of experience leading R&D synthesis teams.
  • Strong expertise in recent advancements and methodologies in synthetic organic chemistry.
  • Proven ability to effectively navigate and contribute within a matrixed organizational structure.
  • Demonstrated speed and agility in adapting to dynamic project needs.
  • High level of accountability and ownership, consistently delivering results.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to engage cross-functional teams effectively.

Education:

 

  • PhD + Post Doc
